The role of concept art is very crucial in the entertainment industry, especially filmmaking. Concept art is a form of illustration used to convey an idea for use in films, video games, animation, comic books, or other media before it is put into the final product. Companies are willing to pay a lot of money for a single piece of artwork or concept because of the concept art serves as a guide for the people to look through the final outcome. The concept it's like a foundation and it needs to be clear and convincing. Concept art usually takes place before the production stage. Moreover, concept art is developed through several iterations. Multiple solutions are explored before settling on the final design. It is not only used to develop the work, but also to show the project's progress to directors, investors, and clients.

Mise en Scène

Mise-en-scene is an expression used to describe the design aspect of a theatre or film production, which essentially means "visual theme" or "telling a story". All of the elements that appear on the camera and the arrangement is counted as the film's visuals. It helps create a sense of character, mood, and setting and also communicates to the audience.

Elements of mise en scène:
  • Rule of thirds
  • Depth
  • Setting and props
  • Costume, hair, and makeup
  • Facial expression and body language
  • The positioning of characters within the frame
  • Lighting and color

Visual Effects (VFX)

Visual effects or VFX is the method by which imagery is created or manipulated outside the context of  a live action shot in film making. Usually some parts of the movie cannot be done during live action shooting, thus VFX will be needed to make a perfect/better scene. Visual effects can be added to live-action, captured through techniques such as green screen, matte painting, rear- and front-screen projection, miniature or forced perspective sets, computer graphic objects, characters, and  environtments, also compositing of images recorded in many ways.

Blog Question

Filmmaking is a craft, what are the stages involved from beginning till end and how does it differ between live action and animated films?

Filmmaking and animation are basically both moving images that aimed to entertain people. However, we can distinguish both of them to a certain point such as the process of the creation.

For the Traditional Filmmaking, there are usually three processes which are the pre-production, the production itself, and post-production.

Pre-production pretty much covers everything that happens before any form of shooting. This is the part where the bulk of workload happens. It occurs aspects like the objective of the movie, writing the script, casting, gathering all the crew, choosing the targeted audience, budget, script, storyboard, settings (where is the location, permission, and so on that is required to prepare for the shooting).

Pretend that pre-production as a foundation of any movie, it needs to be strong enough to hold everything around it. Production is where the director, cameraman, actors, and all of the crew will plunge into the field and actually film the on the location with all the props. During the process, directors generally hope to allow what’s set in pre-production stages to dictate the production. However, it doesn't mean that there are no possibilities in changing a certain part of the scene. Usually, it happens when the film has the need for motion capture.

Post-production is the last step in the filmmaking process. This is the part when all the raw footage is gathered, trimmed, color-graded, edited, and evaluated. Once all done and complete, the final cut is ready to be published and released to the cinema or from any digital media provider.

Differently, the process of creating animated movies is much complex. It presents a different challenge from traditional filmmaking as there are typically no real scenes or human involved.

Pre-production

  • Story : the process where you develop all the ideas and script. It's the great movie idea you have developed. It's the vision of the film.
  • Storyboarding : this is where the script is broken down into scenes and drawn into panels much like graphic novel.
  • Editorial : Once the storyboards are finalized, they are sent to the editorial team who will then create ananimatic out of the boards. Once the script and animatic are complete the voice talent records the final dialougue for the film. Editorial swaps out the scratch dialogue with the real dialogue.
  • Visual development : This gives director and team a clear path forward for the visual look such as characters, environments, props, color pallets. etc.
  • Pre-visualization/pervis : is where artists work with the script and storyboard to create the film in a 3-dimensional environment on the computer.
Production
  • Modeling
  • Surfacing
  • Rigging
  • Layout/set dressing/ anim prep
  • Character Animation
  • Crowds
  • Character Effects/ Simulation
  • FX
  • Technical Director
  • Matte Painting
  • Lighting
Post-production
  • Compositing
  • Music and Sound Design
  • Editorial - phase 2
  • Color Grading
In my opinion, both traditional and animation have the same purpose which is delivering the message via moving pictures. Moreover, I believe that both are fascinating forms that play with a personal dimension appreciate and revere the most.

ASSIGNMENT 1

After consulting face-to-face with Mr. Mike on the first week and told him that I was going to do a music concert poster. On the next week, I sent him my mood board and idea concept via email, because I wasn't able to consult with him face-to-face on that day. Mr. Mike replied that he thought the ideation was pretty good and the artist's personality and style of music was already starting to show. He asked me to polish the ideas and draft the composition in Photoshop.

REFLECTION

Experience
From this week I feel like I finally recognised how Mr. Mike runs his class, how th teaches, and the procedures of the class. I enjoyed every lectures and I always took notes from it. For the first assignment, my progression was not that slow but I was a little bit confused about the execution part. However, Mr. Mike's feedback was very helpful and I tried to find the easiest way to do the poster since I didn't have much time this short semester.

Observation
I observed that sometimes we need to work fast, and think fast as well. Mr. Mike have mentioned about how the real work situation and how to deal with big companies. I was so afraid hearing his experience, but at the same time I wanted to learn more as well. I also observed that I need to reach out for feedback to get more input from the lecturer because it is our job to maintain our work and no one will remind us about the assignments and submission.

Findings

From this week I also discovered about how the industry works, and how manipulated it is right now. I learned that there will always politics wherever we work. Moreover, for the 1st assignment I learned that research process was really crucial when it comes to ideation process and it needed to be clear. If we have a clear idea and concept, the next step will be easier.
