Tracing and Character Design

Lecture 2/Tutorial 2
On this week, Mr. Hafiz started with the review of the Vormator character that we had on the previous week. Mr. Hafiz then told us a bit about proportion, use of color and dominant shapes. Then he brought us a topic about character design. From the presentation, I learned that character design can be a tricky to tackle, because although many of the classic characters familiar to us all through cartoons, entertainment or advertising look simple, which simplicity usually belies the many hours of work that have gone into their development. Otherwise, Mr. Hafiz also talked about basic primitive shapes, and how they can be used to give characters 'personality'.

 Exercise 2
In the tutorial session, we were told to trace an image of a Chiaroscuro pear in Adobe Illustrator. Also, we had to make a general silhouette of the pear using the Pen Tool.

Figure 3. The Chiaroscuro Pear that we had to trace. Half of the pear was blanketed by shadow. Thus, we had to make /imagine what the other half looked like
I started tracing the pear by giving the solid green color.  Then, I made the other half of the pear and gave it some kind of shadow with a darker color of green. I  followed the light and dark side of the pear while at the same time I tried to follow the contour. Then, Mr. Hafiz told us to make another one with a different color and mix them up together. After that, cut it as if it was sliced. Also, we were told to make one with a texture. I chose an ashy texture for my pear.
