Introduction and Vormator Character

Lecture 1&2/Tutorial 1&2
It was our first week and our first class in Illustration and Visual Narrative. Firstly, Mr. Hafiz explained about the general module outline with us and he gave us a rough brief about how the exercises and assignment in the module work. We have to be aware of all the exercises and assignments and read the module carefully, especially about the deadlines.

After the overview brief, Mr. Hafiz told us to make a new e-mail (which had to be a Gmail) because we're going to upload our works and updates on the Google+. So, it would be easier for him to mark our exercises and assignments. Next thing was, we had to make a personal blog or reflective journal (which is this blog) and upload our work including the processes we've done.

Then, Mr. Hafiz gave us a tutorial for Adobe Illustration. Our first exercise was to trace out a variety of shapes for the Vormator assignment. We were to then use these shapes to create our own character without scaling any of the shapes disproportionately. The tracing part was quite easy but I found it kind of difficult to choose which character I wanted to make.

Figure 1. These were the 8 shapes that we should trace. The hardest one to trace for me was the "Wurst" and the "Bar"

Because I like cats, I decided to make a cat monster. I didn't want to put a lot of texture, so I chose to use a solid colour for my character. My colour mood were yellow and brown-ish.

I used most of the shapes except the "Cobra" one. While making this character, Mr Hafiz also taught us how not only to trace an object but how to use Pathfinder, compound shapes, and compound paths.

Pathfinder panel overview

Pathfinder Effects
This tool lets you combine multiple objects using interaction modes. When you use pathfinder effects, you can't edit the interactions between objects.

Compound Shapes
Let you combine multiple objects and specify how you want each object to interact with other objects.

Compound Paths
Let you use an object to cut another object.

After finishing our Vormator Character, we were required to do a laser cut on the practical room. We had to transfer our character into .dxf format then prepare a wood to do a laser cut but first, we had to make an outline of our character by using shape builder tool.

Also, we were required to make a Pokemon card based on our Vormator Card by using the rule of 3rd concept.
